While you can see it on Google you can't see how they compare to you, their size, how textured the work is (especially paintings), and so on.

I remember when I had to do a report on ancient art and going to an exhibit to describe it. The Assyrian relief was actually pretty massive spanning the whole wall. It makes me wonder what sort of life they had at the time, where this would be at, how their cities were.

I have been. I've seen all the classics and statues they have in D.C.

I was just making a general point. Because before extensive internet archiving it was a big deal to see a painting. Because it was only in one place. But now it's one search away. I can see and read every bit of culture without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars to travel to a museum.

Went to the British Museum, saw the Assyrian exhibition. Saw the massive Lamassu, the Balawat gates and the enormous relief gallery, just relief after relief for what felt like miles, and to think that they would all have been painted brightly at one point.

It was incredible. But I also looked at my phone a lot, to research geneology of kings, or for interpretation of some symbol or other.

A good, high quality photograph is as good as seeing it in real life as far as I'm concerned. I remember I saw the book of Kells once, and all I saw was one page behind a glass casing for a few minutes. Now I have the entire thing saved on my computer where I can see far more detail than I could in real life and can look at any page whenever I want.

Same thing with the Assyrian reliefs, I saw them in the museum but it was hot and crowded and I was exhausted from walking around, and seeing them all at once was overwhelming. I can appreciate them better with some pictures.

The problem though is that you can never find very good photographs for everything in a museum, and even when you do they tend to lack things like scale, proper lighting, etc.
>>
>>24836088
lol, just because i don't think I'm super deep for looking at art in a gallery (leaving aside the fact that I actually work in one) doesn't make me a meme kid

you can look at art, then sit down and have a break, read some news on a smartphone, digest the piece, read about it, compare thoughts with friends, it doesn't bother me, what matters is that people are responding to it

but seriously, are we going to compare a bunch of schoolkids who were probably dragged to the Rijksmuseum on a school trip, whether they wanted to go or not, to an adult who voluntarily decided to go of their own curiosity.

Being a fucking smug luddite is not the answer to anything, and desu I'd rather have bored kids quietly using their smartphones in the gallery than running around causing trouble like your little shitstain mutant offspring would

They grew into adolescence at around the same time internet culture became mainstream (2010). They missed out on a lot of development like getting jobs, participating in extra-curriculars (non-sport ECs are definitely dying), or proper dating in favor of playing around on social media.

That being said, lazy parents could've done something about it, but it's easier when their kid is sucked into a phone for hours not bothering them.
>>
>>24836196
>proper dating
Subjective, opinion based; if young people don't value that model of dating why would they care about never having had it? Nobody misses arranged marriages.

>participating in extra-curriculars
Kids have been blowing off EC's to play video games since the 1980s.

>getting jobs
Get the boomers to retire so the massive backlog of people working in shitty low-level jobs can move up the ladder and open up spots for teenagers.

>you can look at art, then sit down and have a break, read some news on a smartphone, digest the piece, read about it, compare thoughts with friends, it doesn't bother me, what matters is that people are responding to it

You may work in a gallery, but I was also a teacher once. Only the smart kids might be doing anything like that.

>Being a fucking smug luddite is not the answer to anything
>not liking what I like makes you smug >:O

>I'd rather have bored kids quietly using their smartphones in the gallery than running around causing trouble like your little shitstain mutant offspring would

Yeah, and most teachers would prefer it to be that way in their classrooms but that wouldn't make us very good at our jobs would it?
>>

Try gain some self-awareness OP. No kids are interested in classic art, it is literally not in their brain. Just like abstract reasoning doesn't develop until ~14, so judging a kid below this on having to be forced to eat healthily because he won't consider his future health is retarded. As is judging these kids for being interested in fun and socializing.

I love galleries now and do a lot of art in my spare time, but I absolutely loathed them as a kid.

Don't conflate the fact that you weren't included in the kids' socialization with the idea that you somehow chose a higher path. You were simply left out.
>>
>>24836856

Exactly, everyone seems to forget what a pathetic shit they were when they were younger. I recently went back to uni to study medicine (im 26) and the 18 year old medics are all cringe in how hard they try to be cool, they seem stupid as brick dust and like the worst music imaginable. But in truth im sure i was the same when i was their age, i wanted to go out a lot and get off in clubs, i loved drum n bass and i made some really awful fashion choices.

Similarly the professors are always astounded by how little we know about medical topics as if some things are common knowledge, and they have clearly also forgotten that they didn't always exist in this state of privy wisdom - and were too at one time uninformed and clumsy.

People need to gain some introspective abilities.
>>
>>24836954

>>
Would you say one of the reasons youth of today are addicted to this shit is because they are all incredibly lonely and shallow or something else?

>>24835489

I miss 2005 and early 00s, Apple and Facebook truly fucked us over by making anyone and everyone come onto the internet by claiming they have a "voice".
>>
>>24836856
>>24836954

Probably true to an extent, but it is possible that a generation is objectively worse. Not so much the kids now, but i fear the kids in 5-10 years will have no autonomy, will be completely socially driven and will also be the biggest cuucks of a generation.

But the current kids can be rated badly for how they are objectively more sex-obsessed and slutty (shitty media and left-wing influence), but they also drink less and look after themselves more in my experience. So maybe they're just different and not worse necessarily.
>>
>>24837041

No, most of them aren't lonely. Just the barrier has been raised as to what being social is - now people feel inadequate if they don't have 10,000 friends and instagram followers. So as opportunity increased so too did the standard of being social. If anything social media has just allowed those who would have otherwise been completely and utterly isolated to have some connections.

No matter how much they saw the meme "the older hate the new generation" history repeats itself.

Guaranteed the cool kids of the 50s thought they would buck the trend because they weren't stupid and oh wait.

Seems like an evolutionary perception trick, where just like we cant see the gorilla in the basketball game, we all cant see the young objectively.

I too think anyone aged 14-25 or so is completely brain dead and dangerous, but sure as shit the world will still be running somehow when im long dead.
>>
>>24836954

I used to be a major bitch when i was younger, hated exercise, was passive aggressive pre-empting not being chosen for team sports by not participating at all (whilst simultaneously telling everyone how bad i was at sports, literally retard-tier grabs at sympathy and attention). Now i am without question the most active person i know; i co-owned a gym for a while, play rugby, and cycle and work out 5 days a week. I think things just change when you grow out of adolescence and that occurs at different times for different people. But judging a generation on what their teens do is and always has been a depressing and pointless exercise.

They will mature and take over from us, just the same as our shitty teenage selves eventually did.
