I hate the idea of working for nothing but really have been wondering if there are unpaid work experience / internships actually out there for trades that would actually take in someone who knows nothing at all. Honestly, it depends on what they think of you. If you make it apparent that you're willing to work hard, ask lots of questions and learn as much as possible, you might get lucky. A lot of trades shops can get stretched thin and become in need of cheap labour. If you make a good first impression, you might get your foot in the door.

I crunched some numbers with a coworker of mine, and we came to the conclusion that if you took two young men, and forced one to become an HVAC guy and the other to become a family doctor, that, because of the time it takes to pay off university (and specifically med school) combined with the fact that a tradesman is making money immediately and has no schooling fees, that the two would be well into their 40's before the doctor "caught up" in terms of financial worth and debt.
Honestly, it's super, super underrated.
