Public school feeds you twice a day, and yes a lot of families depend on school to feed their kids. But there is a lot of ignorance about the actual costs of food. Considering their child only needs to eat once after school for dinner, this should save them a ton of money on food. They don't know how to cook. Stew every fucking day if need be.
My family became poor after my dad had an Aortic Dissection when I was 13. He was the main breadwinner and he could never work again. It took two years to get disability, insurance wouldn't cover the whole 14 hour surgery, and we had to use our entire savings on repaying those bills before they repossessed the house.
Since we weren't always poor, my parents owned (well mortgaged) a home. In NY, even mortgaging a home, means you have too many assets to qualify for food stamps. There were a lot of nights I went to be hungry because we only had instant potatoes or pancakes, and I had eaten those the previous meals.
