You can go to a cafe by yourself here in England, you just have to have a newspaper, book or the news up on your phone. You can even go to the pub with the same sort of thing, I do it every so often and there are lots of people who do the same. You can't go restaurants by yourself, and only certain films are the sort of thing that it is acceptable to go and see by yourself e.g. indie shit, old movies being shown again etc.

I work at an independent cafe (they're cheaper btw, with far higher quality coffee) and it's really common to see people come in and just be for half an hour.
