But its true, hell if you like Lain why not check out other works Abe was involved in like Texnolyze or Haibane Renmei. Or other works written by Chiaki J konaka like Ghost hound. Or shows that share a very similar presentation style to Lain like Boogiepop phantom. While Lain is probably one of my favorite anime, saying its the only good one while not at least looking for shows in a similar vein is just stupid.

Not the anon you were replying to but I loved the novel. I wouldn't call it better though, not because I think its worse or anything there are certain aspects that I find better. But I guess it being as short as it is and one of my favorite scenes being anime only keep it from being my perfected version.
I still do wish they didn't censor the fuck out of the anime though, while I do love it cutting out things like Satous drug use just made no sense.
Also Planetes is fantastic, you should definitely put it at the top of your to do list.
