When people who don't know math speak of it, they're often thinking of pure computation - what calculators are for.
You can be bad at that and still good at math.
Me, for example, I'm terrible at mental arithmetic, but I score hundreds in calculus, and am doing pretty good in physics, because it's all about understanding and applying rather than raw processing power.
