That's not the point. Society changed so much between 2005 and 2010.

Has their ever been a generation with such a huge gap in such a small timeframe? I don't feel like I can ever truly identify with people who have no memory of the pre-2010s internet.

Yeah, but like half of that generation died too, and it wasn't really relevant in the US because most of us didn't really get the full trench warfare experience.

You missed out, m8. Great war, would fight again. The sequel may have had a more colourful cast, but felt a little bit forced at points.

On a more serious note, everything that was good in Europe died on those fields. It's no surprise we lost our empires soon after -- the brave men we needed to keep shit together were the first to go.
>>
>>24744264
The whole lost generation thing is a bit over stated at list for the UK.
The bigger issue was that they would put people form the same town/area in the same regiments etc. So when a battle went poorly or whatever that whole town lost everyone. But in raw numbers it wasn't too bad, for the Brits at least.

Yeah, I'm American and I agree. It would've been nice if the British and the French hadn't escalated the whole thing into a major war just to cripple Germany and interrupt its rise to greatness.

The Germans would have won if the US hadn't gotten involved, and they would have been able to remove commie before it fucked half the world for the rest of the century.

>>
>>24744811
Oh, I see.

But the difference between a single generation being damaged by war and the changes in >>24744039 is that the new world today with smartphones, social media, etc. is permanent.

Instead of one generation experiencing something like a war that the previous and future generations didn't, it's the new generation that's entering a new, different, world, with no recollection of the previous one.

Things didn't actually change that much before and after the Civil War, or before and after World War I (at least not in Britain and France, obviously Russia and the former Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires turned into clusterfucks).
>>
>>24744812

It would've been nice if the Austrians didn't chimp out in the Balkans, or the fucking Krauts respected Belgian neutrality. It was a rare moment of clarity perhaps, but both France and Britain acted with dignity in that situation.

>>24744874
No it didn't, you moron. The 20s was one of the most properous and iconic decades, with a lot of progress in things like the automobile industry.

It's the Great Depression that re-fucked everything, including in Europe. The Weimar Republic was actually doing okay before the crash.
>>
>>24744874
Not as much as Civil War. Even casualties + all flu victims of that time is less than casualties of the civil war which was during smaller population.
If you're looking at just US then civil war is pretty incomparable considering it was when the country literally split apart.

>>24744972
>Things didn't actually change that much before and after the Civil War
I think you're underestimating.
You gave the south losing 18% of men, north lost 8%, you have slavery ending and reconstruction beginning, free blacks moving throughout the states, etc.

If you think 2005-2010 can compare I think you're being silly.
Honestly I'd say there are plenty of times things changed more than 2005-2010, post vs pre-9/11 + iraq war, post ww2, vietnam anti war hippie stuff, civil rights movement, etc.
>>
Starfire.

Starfire >>>>>>>>> Raven.
>>
>>24745065

>The Weimar Republic was actually doing okay before the crash.

Not really. Their recovery in the 20s was fuelled by massive, irresponsible US loans. Even without the crash, eventually New York bankers would realise that they're never getting that money back and pull the plug.
>>
>>24744987
Germany had been advancing at a breakneck pace for the past few decades. The German Empire was one of the most scientifically accomplished states to ever exist. They had also just began to colonize parts of Asia and Africa, and they did it well.

It's not unreasonable to expect that the British and French were beginning to tremble, and wanted to neuter Germany at any cost.

Also removing kebab (the Ottoman Empire) was a top priority for the Brits too. Most of the problems in the Middle East today stem from the British and French colonization that happened after World War I. Borders were drawn without respect for ethinoreligious differences.

There had also been (and still is, to a degree) a three way conflict between Britain, Russia, and the Muslim world. Egypt, Turkey, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Levant provide access to incredibly important waterways like the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean, so Britain had been trying to pull these areas into their sphere of influence since the 1800s, and had more importantly been trying to prevent Russia gaining control of the areas and expanding into the Mediterranean or the Indian Ocean and becoming a naval power.

After World War I, Turkey managed to westernize itself, and acted as a fairly stable ally of the US and Britain throughout the Cold War, and is still a fairly stable ally against Russian influence right now.

>>
>>24745123
Okay, I'll give you the 1960s as being a much bigger change than the digital age. I can tell the difference between old people who came of age before and during/after the 60s. Adults who grew up during and after the 60s act more like people today than people who came of age before the 60s.

I think the Middle East changed more after 9/11 than the US did. Other than a general fear of being attacked, not that much has actually changed in the US. Remember that during the Cold War a nuclear attack from the USSR was considered a very real possibility by most Americans, and they lived in a similar state of fear.

After the Civil War, the political environment in the US permanently changed with regards to the relationship between states and the federal government, but the average person's life in the South didn't actually change that much, black or white. Reconstruction was bungled so badly that a lot of black people ended up worse than before in some respects.

Extensive black migration to industrial northern and western cities only started in the 20s and 30s, when more factories were starting to open up and the Ku Klux Klan's persecution was getting especially brutal.
>>
>>24745583
And what changed from 2005-2010?
Pretty much fuck all.
>>
>>24745350
They weren't doing well, but they weren't doing terribly either. I think they would have been able to rebuild peacefully without the Depression.

Germany is possibly the most efficient, productive country; they usually pay back what they get in some form.

Think about it this way - even after World War II and the Holocaust the US still pumped money into Germany, I don't think unpaid loans in a hypothetical Depression-free post-World War I world would have been enough for the US banks to completely give up on financial dealings with Germans.

They were still dirt poor and cut off from any form of true social advancement and quality education. Many of them had worse food and lodging than they did during slavery.

Lincoln actually planned for a Reconstruction that didn't focus on punishing the South, but when he was murdered, hostility against the former Confederacy increased, and Reconstruction focused more on punishing the South economically. White Southerners felt victimized by the Union, so they took out their anger on the easiest target, the blacks. (Same way the Germans targeted Jews after the Treaty of Versailles punished them.)

Like I said, black lives started to change on a large scale only when millions of black people moved to industrialized northern cities in the 20s through 40s.

It's not that they're necessarily assholes, they just get an unrealistic view of the world.

Obviously it has more to do with how they're raised, good parents won't drop their kids in front of an iPad. But the ones who are just left alone with tablets and social media will probably develop attention problems, which are medicalized as "ADHD" to avoid the bigger issue of neglectful parenting. If Mama Tumblr was told that she should spend more time with her kids and less time working, she wouldn't keep paying Dr. Shekelstein money to treat her child's "ADHD".

White people could still kill black people with impunity.

Black lives were actually in more danger after the Civil War when they weren't a particular person's property with a pricetag. If you killed someone else's slave they'd prosecute you, and masters rarely killed their own slaves because they were valuable.

Their material and social standing really didn't change much after the Civil War, this is an easily demonstrable fact.

I think '05-/10 changed things more for American society overall.

I'll admit that as far as blacks living in the South alone are concerned, things changed more after the Civil War than for the US as a whole in '05-'10, but for the average person in the northeast, Midwest, and West, and for most whites in the south (most whites never owned a slave) things didn't actually change that much after the Civil War.
