At the time, was non-union electrical apprentice working on a government-funded worksite. "Government-funded" (it was halfway housing or something) means it was a going-wage worksite, which in turn means that all workers must be paid union wages, whether they are actually union employees or not.

Unions, or at least IBEW (the electricians' union) exact flat fees, so that whether you're paid 21/hr or 210/hr you still pay $5-7/hr in union fees. I could go into the politics of what this funds and you probably don't care, but it means that when I'm working on a going-wage worksite as a non-union-member, I'm making a lot more than unionmen would be -- who, in turn, generally make more than non-unionmen on regular worksites.

I do a lot less going-wage stuff now, but it was nice at the time. I'm currently weighing the benefits of a highway-construction position I've been offered, it would be the same situation as far as being a non-unionman getting the full union wage with no union dues.

I wouldn't recommend electrician as a first trade if you have zero trade experience, if you seriously want to do trade (and have no problem with five eight-hour physical-workdays every week) I'd recommend finding a carpentry crew or something. It's not as soulless and backbreaking as masonry, in fact depending on the crew (residential is, in my experience, the one to get into as far as that trade goes) it's fairly light work 75% of the time -- heavy-lifting-wise, at least.

Trades and general construction are great work for robots. Complete autists fit right in on a jobsite where nobody's talking about anything non-work-related, and crews tend to be pretty conservative -- there's certainly never any SJW-ing in the workplace.

Also some facts checking

MEDIAN (note not mean/average which is a shit number) salary/yr of all college grads is $45,478, lowest is $36,237 for lib arts ~ source (http://time.com/money/3829776/heres-what-the-average-grad-makes-right-out-of-college/)

From collegedata.com "According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-
of-state residents attending public universities
>>
>>24725249
I'm currently coasting on about $3000 until I get around to getting another job (left my old one), that's MAYBE two months in somewhere like Seattle and that's if you're pennypinching. I'm in a redneck town and I can go six months easy on that without feeling pinched.

It's definitely frustrating to hear people go "hurr $21/hr soooo rich lol," if they live in downtown San Francisco that's barely enough to surive but in other places (interior Southwest is generally cheap as dirt) you're living comfortably middle-class on that.
>>
>>24725278
Hey tradebro, I was electrical apprentice for a while and I just quit a masonry job because I was tired of the boss and I have enough saved up to last a while.

It's the easiest of all the trades judging by my bros in other trades. Very comfy, I'm an apprentice and my teacher is very nice and helpful. All of my co workers are humble hard working folks or stoners, the work is pretty simple and customers tend to just leave you alone until you're done. There is a lot of opportunity to be self employed too. I know one guy who worked for a company while also working on his own on the side, eventually he was able to leave the company and do what he wanted full time. The pay isn't amazing even when you are a master plumber, but it's certainly enough to live a comfortable life. If ya want the big bucks, start your own company.

Top kek, the only reason most women are employed is because the store figured that an employee and a machine were about the same price but the employee would prevent them being sued.

Perhaps in the future, businesses will have AA-type incentives not just for minorities and imaginary-minorities like women, but for anyone. Not dragging wageslaves through a 40-hour workweek perhaps, but maybe something like offering NEETs a significant bonus on their NEETbux for working 10 or more hours a week. It would at least open the door to new careers making real money in a real economy for some of the more inspired workers, perhaps enough to keep our human workforce at the levels it needs to be to keep a nation running even in a theoretical 95%-automated economy.

If you really mean that, look into masonry and highway-work (both almost always hiring somewhere) jobs. You'll work your ass off, but you'll have to use your brain only a little bit more than your average liberal arts student. It might take three weeks to build the walls of one house, and those entire three weeks you're doing exactly the same thing; picking up bricks and putting them in front of the last brick you moved.

Plus, some masons make bank. On the West Coast at least, even 'lower' tradesmen like masons and unskilled ditch-diggers make enough to live middle-class lifestyles with a house and nice cars by the time they have kids.

That graph doesn't mean anything if it doesn't tell you how it's measured, much like the "wage gap" graphs that don't take into account the fact that most higher earners are in a household with a wife, and thus a woman essentially shares that income with them.

If it takes children under 18 into account, for instance, then the bottom 10% is essentially meaningless since I'm pretty sure even Bill Gates' kids were in that bracket when they were six. Additionally, whether or not it takes charitable donations into account is another huge issue -- I could be off on the numbers, but I believe Bill Gates donates somewhere between 80 and 95% of his income to charity -- which doesn't just make his effective "distribution" smaller, but effectively increases the bottom's "distribution."

Charts that don't go into detail about how their numbers were obtained don't mean shit and belong on Tumblr.

People like you are why construction wages are so high.

Unrelated note, but I like this trend at least in the field of construction, because it lets the hardworking illegal/quasi-legal immigrants contribute to society and make something of themselves so their kids don't have to deal drugs, while weeding out the shit legal-citizens who would not even make America great again if given the chance. I've met some truly amazing immigrants in construction, and don't feel threatened by them at all -- even with immigration, the trades are still crazy lucrative because Americans just aren't raised with hardworking ideals anymore.

I moved from America because my single mother could not afford to support me past highschool which was fine.

It's not impossible, but if you don't have experience, it's an awful lot to grasp. ESPECIALLY if you want to go union -- that's a horrible choice imho for people who don't know shit (no offense, we've all been there at one point) about construction. Renovation work's even worse, you're on a tight schedule and a tighter budget with no room for "how the fuck do I even do this."

Doing another trade doesn't mean you can't go union-electrician (IBEW, if burger) eventually. That's what i'd recommend, I wish I'd've done another trade first.

in the mid 1900s the high school diploma was optional because you could get a decent labor job without it. but the HSD basically guaranteed you a great job and enough money to support your whole family single handedly.

now a days a HSD will barely get you a job at mcd or manual labor. todays equivalent is the college degree which costs 10s of thousands of dollars.

even the college degree is becoming over saturated though and in the future you will probably need a phd in sanitation management or some shit in order to get a minimum wage dish washing job.

we're fucked unless we invent robots to do literally everything for us and change over to a complete liesure society with no wage slavery

You honestly don't understand the concept of working to build a resume? Also, most general-labor places will pay anyone over 18 who can swing a hammer or pick up a shovel at least $12/hr, then bam just don't get your retarded ass fired within two months and you've established that you can put in a workday without whining about your vagina. Now you're ready to apply to places like that.

>>24726851
>IBEW drug tests like heck so I quit
Wouldn't know about that, I've never been tested for all the non-union (even working on government sites) stuff I've done. Hell, some of my coworkers have fourtwenty-blazed on-site a couple times (not often, but still, it's happened, and alcohol on-site is routine.)

Like I keep saying, non-union work in general is pretty easy to get into, and once you've got 6-12 months of that under your belt, you probably have enough labor experience for anyone offering a full apprenticeship to take your application seriously. But hey, you don't *need* that other labor, it's always possible to go straight into electrical.

If you're "going straight in," I'd absolutely recommend getting in with a larger company and being prepared to shovel all day. Don't worry, you're still building "electrical apprentice" hours that count towards certification, but between the size of the crew and the relative unskilled nature of the new-guy tasks, you're a lot less likely to be fired than if a small crew hires you and finds out the hard way you don't know the first thing about laying underground conduit. (First day on the job, I heard "underground work" and thought we'd be in a tunnel, turns out it means you're just laying stuff down on dirt before piling more dirt on top of it, generally in preparation for a concrete slab to be poured on top of the whole thing.)

most of these, including the video where that image came from (iirc), are based off of household income.
>>
>>24727693
Dude I respect what you're saying, but if you're trying to make an argument, "These numbers are based on this, which was a totally accurate survey because I said so, just trust me here" isn't how to do it on any website without a blue background.

I'm not even arguing against what you're saying, I'm just telling you that saying "No it's true, believe me" isn't giving any more sources than the original image was. Which means that you're not going to change anyone's mind, because if they didn't believe it before, "trust me it's true" won't make them start believing. I've seen well-sourced and official graphs that look more-or-less like that, but that isn't one of them so it can't be held in the same regard.

Besides, even "household income" needs to be clarified. Do a rich household of eight and a poor household of two both count as "one household," for instance, because that's another factor that might change the shape of the graph. For that matter, household age is relevant as well, generally speaking a household of a childless or empty-nest 55yo couple will have a lot more to throw around than a household of two 19 year olds who just had twins. My dad, for instance, makes (as of January this year) just barely over six figures, but when he was my age (24) his income was probably not very much above that magical "poverty line" the government draws.

the UC schools charge about 20k in tuition now, with 10k in living fees. Even public universities are costing about 30k to attend.

Making 45k/yr means you're taking home around 33k or so. If you have 100k in loans (from 4 years of college assuming you got some scholarship) at the very least that will take 3 years to pay back, and that's if you literally don't spend anything. Not everyone has the luxury of living with their parents, and even the ones who do- some parents will charge rent.

The cheapest you can possibly rent for a single bedroom (shared apartment) in my city is around 1000. Factor into car, phone, food, electricity, internet, misc items and you'll be spending at least another 500-600 or so. You're lucky if you're able to contribute even half of your 33k take-home income to your loans.

At that speed it will take you around 7-9 years depending on the interest rate of your loans. You'll litterally be 30 by the time you're done paying back your loans. Of course, your salary will increase, but dont you need to buy a new computer, new clothes, a new car, a house?

Its fucking insane how much the US charges for education
