Just finished HTML and CSS on codeacademy, coding is so boring I would kill myself if that was my job.
>>
At my university, I have classes all over the campus. For some reason they delegate certain buildings for offices, but that isn't where the classes are held.

Anyways, the building where most of the CS students hang out has some of the most cringiest conversations. They all look like douchebags too. Like thay want to be the next mark zuckerberg or some shit. Primpy little white boys and girly indian guys.

When you know how to code is like you can create an universe in the machine. Don't blame anyone If you are a dull fag without any though or imagination.

its clearly not oo.

i feel like programming is going to be the next wage slave job. we're gonna be replacing mindless physical jobs like cashiering or delivery in the long run, but we'll have tons of openings to program their replacements.

What is the best programming language to learn?

What do namespaces have to do with OO? I just meant that I hoped that all those functions don't clutter the default namespace.

>>

>i feel lik programming is going to be the next wage slave job

That won't happen because a surprisingly large majority of the population is literally to dumb to code. I used to think anyone could do what I do at work, but over time I realized expecting people to be able to keep track of complicated invisible logic circuits is like expecting people to be able to keep up in olympic sports. In both cases it's only a small number of freaks who operate at those extremes. Even the people applying to developer jobs are surprisingly often not at all experienced in actual programming.
>>
>>24723050
For practical shit, start with C++, then go Java, followed by C#. Ruby and Python are also really good, but really if you can understand C++ and Java you're set.
>>
what the fuck is this? every time someone start programming thread it is some php / js plab. are there really no real coders?

C. You will learn how computers actually work and will be able to translate this knowledge into any other language you choose to learn after. Plus, every device that exists has a C compiler for it.

Jesus christ, are you trying to fuck him up?

That's why there's frameworks anon.
No one really writes code anymore, they just configure APIs and frameworks.

I'm lucky if I get to write an original line of code once a week.
>>
>>24723144
c++ does not have that huge applicability anymore yet it is the best programming language to understand memory management. or well maybe c itself might be enough for that purpose.
>>
>>24723255
Why do you fags hate HTML?
>>
>>24723265
HTML is not a programming language, bakayaro.
>>
>>24723340
But I like it so much its really fun to use HTML I mean seriously how could you not like it?
>>
>>24723231
I agree, in few decades programmers as we know them today will become obsolete.
>>24723265
because it is not even programming language in the first place. + without twig templates and javascript it is worthless
>>
>>24723340
ok and neither is json. yet, 90% of APIs offer json as an output. its important to know, and html is like a gateway drug to programming. it leads to css, then js, which might lead to php, sql, and then other shit.
>>
>>24723265
>>24723365
As I said in a similar thread, my next site isn't going to use HTML at all. Just Client side XML + XSLT + CSS. No JS either, fuck that.

Don't listen to any of the other replies. It boils down to preference, because there's a handful of great programming languages. Pic related.
>>
>>24723422
Well, fine, it does use some elements in the XHTML namespace. xhtml:title, xhtml:a, and so on. But the data are pure XML. I've had it with needing server-side processing to host things.
>>
>>24723386
So? You learn it one month when you're 12 then move onto an actual programming language.

tfw BASIC is useless nowadays but you still like it because it reminds you of that amazing summer you spent making robots.
>>
>>24723386
well in the end you end up transforming XML into HTML with XSLT anyway

If coding with APIs and frameworks were easy enough for normal people to do then there wouldn't be graphic user interface based software i.e. 99.99% of the interactions people have with computers today. Programming will never be popular with the general public. If anything, the trend is heading in the opposite direction with the average computer user being pushed towards thinking even less than they already do. Just look at mobile phone 'apps', which often do the same thing visiting the company's website would accomplish, only the user gets to press a button instead of having to deal with navigating to a URL themselves.

Yes.

you forgot the half billion casts on one line because it throws a shitfit over the smallest stuff
>>
>>24722929
Javascript is functional and also everywhere. Unless you're a sperg and want to use haskell or whatever your uni taught you stfu desu senpai
>>
>>24725481

You don't need to know math to do programming, but if you were shit at math, it's probably because you're shit at thinking in general and the same deficiency in thinking skills will prevent you from getting anywhere in what is basically the realm of professional athletics of the mind.
>>
>>24725535
Those are compiler warnings, not errors dipshit. If you know what you're doing you can just ignore them or clean them up with casts if you want.
>>
>>24725529

>but I'm skilled in every other subject

That's because the other subjects let you get away with bullshit while math has absolute right and wrong answers. Programming won't let you get away with bullshit either, if your code doesn't make sense your compiler won't make up the difference for you, it'll just fail to run.
>>
>>24722441
>Codecademy

Why is this meme site so popular? I decided to use it as a supplement to college education and I was disgusted. What a horrible way to learn anything.

>hurr durr put this word in double quotes
>WHOA NOW YOU KNOW A LOT ABOUT STRINGS WOOHOO

How can anybody use that site?
>>
>>24725605
Is there any better sites?
>>
>>24725577
Pretty much every compiler shits itself and errors out unless you explicitly tell it not to care which fucks portability (unless we makefile now)
>>
>>24725605
Teaches you the basics. If you want to learn more you can. It's a lot easier and faster than fucking going chapter by chapter in one of the many shitty books out there.
>>
>>24725605

Any form of "learning" code that isn't on the job learning to solve for actual problems is meme-learning. Nobody learns shit when they're learning just to "know a language" from websites.
>>
>>24725626
>not using cmake

what are you, a caveman?
>>
>>24725626
Have you ever used GCC? It throws warnings left and right if you try to do something without casting properly, but that doesn't stop the compile, unless you tell it to treat all warnings as errors using the -Werror flag
>>
>>24725676
>>24725677
That is just one problem with it
Its a steaming pile of shit
I legitimately prefer assembly over it because it doesnt try to tell me what I can and cant do
>>
>>24725543
javascript isn't functional nerd
it just has a few aspects of functional programming, like closures and first class functions
>>
>>24725694
have fun with your segfaults and trying to debug anything ever
>>
>>24725535
why the fuck are you having to cast stuff with any frequency

why are you having to cast stuff multiple times

maybe you're just bad
>>
>>24725694
>That is just one problem with it
How is that a problem? It's just letting you know that hey, this statement here looks a little weird but it's going to go ahead with the compile anyway with the assumption that the programmer actually knows what they're doing. In my experience, that's the fundamental difference between C and other "safer" languages: it doesn't make the assumption that you suck at programming.

I challenge you to list one legitimate problem with C that couldn't be solved by not being incompetent. Benefits of other languages (C++ has garbage collection, etc) don't count. Must be a legit fundamental problem with the language itself.
>>
>>24725697

is ruby functional then?

>intro class that used scheme
more like wrote a scheme interpreter in scheme
>>
Does anyone actually do pure functional programming? Never tried it myself. What's the usefulness of it?
>>
>>24725853
it's fucking terrible dude

literally 99% of the time no fallthrough is the correct and intended behavior, having `fall` instead of `break` is the right design choice

pointer math over better collection iteration is also a legitimate design flaw in C
