Who cares? Everyone involved knows exactly what they're getting into. It's a consumer culture, it's only natural that holidays would reflect that. I don't think that somehow makes it inherently less valuable. It's a bit exploitative and manipulative, but that's pretty normal at this point. At the end of the day, its a time people come together and spend time as a family, which is in my opinion the real value of it. Anything that involves reinforcing family relationships and values is a plus, in my opinion.

I love and hate Christmas. I try to enjoy and feel the wonder and spirit of it all but in the end I just feel empty and alone
