This. It's called the overjustification effect. Once you categorize a pleasurable hobby into "work", you start liking it less and less.

>The overjustification effect occurs when an external incentive decreases a person's intrinsic motivation to perform a behavior or participate in an activity. Researchers have found that when extrinsic rewards (such as money and prizes) are given for actions that people already find intrinsically rewarding, they will become less internally motivated to pursue those activities in the future.

Psychology. A lot of it shallow mumbo jumbo it feels like, but a lot of really interesting stuff too. And being fairly intelligent and working somewhat hard in this field is good enough to be one of the better psychologists as most people in my uni, while not bad people, are not that smart. I'm glad I didn't go to medschool, I love all the free time I have, all people who are into medschool/engineering are working their asses off. And I also feel like it's a legit needed profession as I've seen many people in my environment improve their lives and get out of bad places through a good therapist.

Academia is a joke. CS major studying math at a stupid rate which guarantees everyone forgets 95% of what they've learnt two months after graduation and then wonder where 3 years of their life had gone.

Why is the education system obsessed with false learning, i.e short-term memorization? Is it because they couldn't test you otherwise?

Honestly, I feel you bruh.

Academic philosophy is great for teaching the basic concepts and theories from classic philosophers.

However, philosophy should be done outside the classroom as well. It's not enough to just sit in a class and talk about what's being said in class. I feel like while philosophy as a field tries to encourage students to research things on their own, the few philosophy students that I know aren't about that life. While a professor can push your critical thinking capabilities, you gotta do some homework and develop it further.

in England they have these BTEC college courses which basically give you assignments tasks, ie build a program that does this, write something about how this works, create a diagram or presentation to explain how a certain thing works.

They put these in frames and contexts where it could apply to the real job. For instance, in IT you are tasked to create computer specs within a budget for a specific company (imaginary) and you have to write a bunch of justifications for each component and its price, etc.

They don't have exams or tests; you simply fail the course entirely if you hand in one assignment late. So it also gets you used to the completing projects in X amount of time thing.
Even if you get it in early, you may not meet all the requirements of the assignment, so you may have to revise it. (Lately they've been making it so the lecturers can't give advice/ help you out; just point out what criteria you missed.)

You have good conversations with them though. The philosophy professors are really chill and they're knowledgeable. It's pretty common for a lot of the books to be a complete chore to read.

It might be a waste of money to go to college, but the professors at least at my university are a useful resource.

I'm a 3rd year nursing student. Yes, the work is stressful but I find it really rewarding. A lot of my classmates have dropped out by now though so that's always sad to see.

I think the 3 days a weeks/12 hour shift life is the way to go anyways. I think i'd kill myself on the mon-fri 9-5 life. I haven't done anything very exciting yet, but it's really interesting because there are always new clients with new issues you've never seen before.

Would give nursing an 8/10 so far, but I won't know until 4th year really.

History is important, not always practically, but culturally.

It can help with things like understanding why two ethnic groups hate each other, why those blood feuds started, and how you might go about effecting change.

In reality though, I chose it because I found it interesting and thought it was something people shouldn't remain ignorant of. I didn't choose it because I wanted to further society in way.

The profession has taken notice, now everything about studying Law has a filter. Starting with the LSAT, then in Law School every single test is out to fail you and fewer people pass the bar exam, at least in my jurisdiction.

We do have pretty high suicide, alcoholism rates and its the second profession preferred by psychopaths.

kek at math being high tier.

It's an utterly worthless degree on it's own. I have an undergraduate degree in math from a top20 university and I spammed my resume to every employer in a 40 km radius. The only responses I got were from MLM-type scams. I wasn't even called into any interviews.

Now I'm working a minimum wage, unskilled manual labour job that I could have gotten straight out of high school.

In order for a math degree to pay off you need masters, or preferably a phd. Anything less is unimpressive to the HR department and will get your resume chucked in the bin.
>>
>>24719221
I have a bachelor's in math from a shitty state school in Pennsylvania. I make $16/hr doing manual labor alongside high school dropouts because, like you, my degree is useless. I'm going back for a masters in accounting in the Fall semester.
>>
>>24719380
To be fair I never drank the kool-aid about math being a prized degree. I still thought I could find a shitty cubicle job with a maths degree but nope.

Even going into teaching isn't a guarantee. There is no teacher's shortage even in the stem fields. People are having fewer and fewer children and this translates into a lower demand for teachers. Teacher's college is another 2 years and chances are you'll spend the next ten years as a supply/occasional teacher. Many of my friends went into teaching are already regretting it.
