The difference is that Japan, as a whole, isn't pandering to the largest demographic. I'll use video games as an example because people are arguing about that. Western video games mostly went to shit because people started engineering their games for profit which means targeting the largest audience possible, regular people. That doesn't mean all games are shit, it just means that a lot of games that could have been good turned to shit because the developers wanted to make more money. It's not that video games are ruined, it's that an enjoyable game is less likely to be made. Here's a good way to think about it, children's shows pander to children, obviously, because of their target audience they can get away with a lot of shit that regular people would consider bad. You can apply this to anything, video games targeted at regular people don't need to be as good as video games targeted at people that do nothing but play video games.
