usually I'll spill some food or actually more often what I'm drinking on them, from there after offering them my handkerchief I can use it as an ice-breaker to start talking to them. I can give more advice on this technique if you'd like, I've become quite good at it.

I never talk to people if there is nothing to talk about. I talk to colleagues and classmates about interesting topics and issues, but I never initiate small talk myself. I don't use nor need any "conversation starter".
