I think they did it due to the fact that they could not find any purpose for themselves besides the fact that they were both completely consumed by the violent tendencies they exposed themselves to. At some point they both lost the hope of any confidence in themselves to do any thing productive for themselves in any other way they acting out on their homicidal ideation. For someone who begins thinking about murder the way these two did, and then allows themselves to reinforce this desire by using the negative responses they got from peers, it took them over. Ever see the movie they made for school called hit man for hire? These kids just really were fixated on killing being there purpose for whatever reason. And along with the way they viewed people around them outside of their bubble of delusion, they couldn't see any possible purpose for themselves other then acting out on their ravenous desires. Some people get plagued by thoughts of mass murder and go through life to over come it and do something good with themselves, others like these kids, can find no way to see through it and act out on it because they do not have any confidence in their abilities other then the megalomania that comes along with feeling like you have power over life and death. In simple terms, they said fuck it this is our purpose.
