If I'm not mistaken, the thing about those penguins is that they return to the same spot every year. Their whole flock does. So there's a possibility that there's a better spot within walking distance. Maybe every once in a while one penguin goes dashing off in some random direction. If he finds something better that way, maybe he'll bring more penguins with him next time. So, not all of them make it, because a lot of the environment isn't very habitable. But if you never venture out and try something new, you'll never leave that one little spot, and when that spot stops being viable, you and everybody you know is screwed.
