Whenever it was when families couldn't afford to have the wife stay at home to care for the children and make home cooked meals instead of kids being raised by the TV and given shitty fast food because the parents are too tired and overworked.

Most of the American art from the 1950s was overly idealistic and didn't reflect the lifestyle of the majority of Americans. Things weren't that rosy unless you were an upper middle class white family, and even then it was largely about image.
