So the egg and the potato are sitting in the boiling water. What happens? The potato gets "softer" and the egg gets "harder". But do they really change that dramatically? The egg doesn't become a stone and the potato doesn't turn to liquid. No they get to be about the same level of hardness.
So what is this allegory trying to tell us? That adverse circumstances harden the soft and soften the hard? What about the fact that being boiled ultimately kills both the egg and the potato? A boiled egg can never grow into a chicken and a boiled potato can never germinate. Are we supposed to take this to mean that in death we are all equal? Does what we are made of even really matter when the cold touch of death looms over us?
Notice how the egg is frowning and looking at the world outside the pot. He knows he is fucked and is angry about his circumstances, he is bitter, gazing outside of the pot at what could have been, sadly there is nothing he can do to escape the pot (he has no arms).
Now consider the demeanor of the potato. He is smiling, he is alright with his circumstances and has accepted them. His eyes are closed, he does not even consider the possibilities of life outside the boiling water. He has arms yet he doesn't use them to try an escape from the pot, rather he uses his arms to hold himself in the pot.
