Is that true at all? I can't see how bench press and other upper body weight lifting exercises would be outclassed by push ups. Is my uncle just an idiot? He got pretty big at one point and he has my genetics so I kind of trust him. He says I should just drop and do 30 at various times through the day until I've done 250-300, every day.

Google good pushup form and then start doing them either every night or every morning, or perhaps both. Start small and build up over time. Doing the same thing with situps is a good idea as well.
