You can eat cheap if you know how to work around the menu and use the mcdonalds app. I'll use the filet o fish for example. You can get a filet o fish for $3.80. Order it off the break menu and it's $2.50 and you get a small fries. You're paying less and getting fries. Also, never order a 10 piece mcnugget. A 20 piece is only 60 cents more.
I prefer Wendy's.
I go in, ask for a large #3 combo with Coke, hand the cashier 10 bucks, and I get to have a massive 2 billion calorie burger with 10 pounds of salt on my fries, downing it with Coke and having the ice melt when I'm halfway finished so it tastes awful.

One good thing about living in suburban NY is the amount of diners here.
I can get a real burger with real fries and an endless cup of coffee for only a couple bucks more than fast food (and it's only more because of the tip, diner burgers are the same price as fast food burgers). Hell, in a lot of places it will come with a free soup or salad too.
As much as NY sucks, it must be fucking terrible to live in some shitty ass suburb in the South or the Midwest where there are few affordable local restaurants and just about everything is a corporate franchise.

I hate to say it, but taco bell's food is good, and most of all it's price competitive. You get alot of food for what you pay for.
Plus, at least personally, it takes more taco bell to make me feel ill than other shitfood joints. I have to pace myself all the same, though. With greasy fast food, my eyes are always bigger than what my system can detoxify or whatever in one sitting. If I go over that limit, I'll feel like shit for 4 hours.

The only good things McDonalds have are McGriddles and the Latinas that serve them.

there's a local franchise where I live that serves hand-pulled noodle dishes including ramen-style soup with a shit-ton of noodles, cooked meat (I go with beef tenderloin), bok choy, green onions, Thai basil and some other vegetables I'm not sure of. So fukin good and for only 8$ for a huge-ass bowl it's the one thing I always get when I'm in that part of the city.
I haven't eaten fast food in over a decade. I have no cravings for it and hardly remember what it tastes like.
Though I do remember the smell every time I have diarrhea. My sister would always get a bad stomach from fast food, and maybe I associated the two odors because of that. Oddly, it's always me thinking "this smells like McDonald's" when I have diarrhea, not "this smells like diarrhea" when I have the misfortune of being near someone who has a bag of garbage.

The upside to the Midwest is much, much lower cost of living. If you live in an area here with at least a quarter of a million people there's still some decent variety of food. Beyond that it's just more motivation to work on cooking skills.
Big metro areas would be great for someone with money.
