It sounds like you're using the carrot on a stick method, its a good strategy to have them know your expectations are high and she needs to always be on her toes.
If my mom brings me home candy I will only mumble a tiny thanks, and it will periodically amount to better presents. She snaps at me too though, emotional wreck.
