I am pretty sure that it is an urge that needs to be exercised like a muscle. Studies about neglected children/animals have shown they don't develop the reliance on "needing" it because they were never exposed to it. Their brains develop differently, possibly to cope with it.
I am not going to dig any research up, that is just my angle on the issue. It might be built in, but that doesn't mean it can't be removed.

Im all for self improvement and that kinda jazz, and the saying "success begets success" is true for the most part, people will try to 'latch' onto you, they hang by your coat tails because being networked to you has its advantages.
Though some people are genuine and who are interested to see you succeed, a lot are parasites who stick around because of the status elevation it gives them. "oh you know anon!? " etc etc.
I don't even think I have the status, but its perceived to be that way, because I have money and started having a lot of interesting hobbies and travel to many places.
I actually feel more comfortable overseas, because no one knows who I am, and they don't have to know me, so I get along really well because I don't have to see them again.
While the people I know at home usually have an agenda or something..

Actually it's the complete opposite. Look up the Pit of Despair experiments and other experiments done by Henry Harlow on rhesus monkeys. Baby monkeys who weren't shown physical affection by their mothers developed severe emotional problems and behaviors parallel to human depression.
