i want to get a gun for self defense that's cheap. what would you recommend?
>tfw get scared at night
>>
>>24579893
Fired 50 rounds through a Walther PPK/S chambered in 380 at the range today, and it grouped very well for me. Once I have the cash and find one on the market that I'm happy with, I'm nabbing one up to train on and get my CCW with. Fun gun, aesthetic as shit, and fashy as fuck. I loved it.
>>
>>24580310
how much will you spend?
>>
I only CC because I noticed an increased number of pit bulls in my neighborhood.

I had a BB gun painted black but I got arrested and it got confiscated.

like $500 or under
>>
My security job requires me to carry a concealed gun issued to me
>>
>>24580388
that's a good price range, you can get something that will last. Don't cheap out. Glock, Springfield, Ruger, and S&W all make very nice handguns that can be had under $500. Get a 9mm, .380, or ,45, and stay away from .40 (snappy recoil, low capacity, but same ballistics as 9mm). Practice at least once or twice with it, and leave a mag or two loaded with hollowpoints for protection
>>
>>24580648
Not him, but in your opinion, is it worth getting something in 10mm?

IIRC /k/ really likes them, not sure if they are being serious or if it is just a meme.

Not really, there's WAAAAAY too many fucking 10mm fanboy circlejerks and most of them don't even own one.

Just get a 9mm. If you have a 9mm or .45 and feel like you can't kill whatever you need to kill, get a fucking rifle. Simple as that.

>>24580310
s&w m&p's are going for ~$370 thanks to black friday sales, very good guns for the money, much better than other guns priced at that range.

If you need more info, just let me know. I'm sick of browsing /k/ and I would rather help other people tbqh

Uh oh! We got a tough guy here!
Really though, I carry too, but every other carrier I've met is the type of person that picks fights with people and the first thing they do is pull their gun out, and the only reason they carry is to make them self feel tougher.
You should be required to demonstrate that you can kick and punch with a certain amount of force before you are allowed to carry.
>>
>>24580682
not really, I'd say just go with a more common caliber

also, where's the anti-self defense britkeks? they usually show up by now
>>
>>24580811
>>24580900
Alright, I'll stay away from 10mm then

One more thing, what's the deal with hollow-point rounds?
They seem to be quite a bit more expensive than regular rounds, but is it true that they are safer than regular rounds?
>>
>>24580682
10mm is a neat cartridge, but not the most practical. Like the other guy said, get one of the big three (9mm, .40 or .45) and pick whatever you prefer. I wouldn't recommend .357 sig because ammo is more expensive, and it's very important that you shoot and practice regularly.
>>
>>24580310
Get an S&W M&P15 Sport or WASR if you're willing to spend $500. Get a pistol if $300 is closer to what you're comfortable spending. Fuck shotguns, they're only good for wing shooting.

>what's the deal with hollow-point rounds?

Unlike FMJ's (what you regularly find at stores and practice with) they rapidly expand and transfer all their energy into the target instead of zipping through and causing minimal tissue damage like FMJ's.

If you know any shit about conceal carry, you get things like gold dots, federal hst's, hornady amax

If you want, I can explain to you what to exactly look for when buying a handgun and save you the trouble of wadding through the fucking mess that is every /k/ thread on this subject matter.
>>
>>24580943
Hollow point are meant to expand into their soft tissue instead of overpenetrating, so yes. They are also meant to neutralise threats quicker because the kinetic energy is dumped in the target. A regular FMJ bullet would likely just punch a hole and exit your target.

Get a reputable hollow point bullet (Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Hornady, etc.) and you're good
>>
>>24580943
they mushroom out on impact with flesh and materials with the same consistency, therefore doing more damage to the attacker with a lower chance of over penetration, hence safer for innocent bystanders.
>>
>>24581021
expand into soft tissue* My bad
>>
>>24580682
10mm is a really cool cartridge, but yeah, it's definitely a meme.
>>
Thanks for all the help guys.
>>24581021

>>24581019
Yeah, a rundown on buying a handgun would be really great. I don't have a lot of money, but I am almost 21 soon, and I want to get a concealed carry permit and handgun ASAP, because I work in the heart of Atlanta and I have no way of defending myself if the need arises.
>>
>>24580310
If you don't mind a shitty trigger, get a S&W SD9. It's a reliable striker-fired 9mm pistol, and a good value (under 400$).
>>
>>24581067
If you want something for first time CC, I'd recommend a Glock 42 (.380) or a Glock 43 (9mm), both are very small, ultra reliable and lightweight guns, or if you're looking for a revolver, S&W airweights and Ruger LCRs are pretty great. If you're on a tight budget, Bersa .380 Thunders are very reliable and around the $250 price range used. Just make sure you get something you are comfortable carrying and shooting
>>
>>24581067
This is what to look for when buying a gun, primarily for cc
>find a quality gun that fits your budget
>brands like glock, s&w, cz, sig, and others I can't name as of now all make good quality cc guns
>consider the sizes ranging from full size, compact and subcompact
>go to a gunstore and ask to see several guns you may like
>get a feel of the controls, the placement of the magazine release, slide catch, safety if applicable, decocker if applicable
>make sure you're able to reach all these with ease
>know the differences between a DAO, DA/SA, SAO and striker fired pistols (I can explain this for you if you wish)
>if you find something you might like, do research on the internet and read read read the good AND the bad parts of the gun

Also it's worth taking into consideration on the climate and what you typically wear year round. Now, I live in Miami where it's 90 degrees in the summer, I can't be carrying my full size P226 which is a pretty big gun wearing only shorts and a t shirt, now if I lived in somewhere cold where jackets and layers are a must, I can definately get away with concealing that.
>>
>>24581160
forgot to mention, it's full-sized (not meant for concealed carry) and has a standard capacity of 16+1, so it's a good choice for home defense if that's what you need
>>
>>24581189
also I'd like to add, stay the FUCK away from brands like Jimenez, some are literally safety hazards to shoot. Just do your research on anything suspiciously cheap.
>>
>>24581160
If you're considering this, just save the $25-$50 more and get yourself a used glock
>>
>>24581189
can confirm this as good advice.

Also good choices: M&P Shield, SIG P938, Charter Arms Bulldog, Ruger LC9s
>>
>>24580877
Bull shit, if someone attacks me expect to get shot. Also those of us that aren't constantly agroed don't tell people about our carry
>>

> every other carrier I've met is the type of person that picks fights with people and the first thing they do is pull their gun out, and the only reason they carry is to make them self feel tougher.

That could not be farther from reality. You're either full of shit or you live in Detroit

Thanks a lot guys, That definitely helped me a lot, I'll also be doing more research on my own.
I'll definitely learn more about the terminology and proper usage as well.

Also, when it comes to concealed carry, what options are there for carrying your firearm?

Right now, I use both my front pockets for phone/keys/wallet/etc, and I'm not sure where a firearm would fit in.

What's the "best practice" for carrying? Do most people just stick the gun into a pocket, or are armpit holsters a practical solution?

Both of you just proved my point.

Good quality holsters, I'm not well versed in holsters but brands like aliengear are liked among people.

Now, saying this, holster carry IS NOT the only way you can carry. Get creative.

>healthy disagreement is "picking a fight"

I don't know bud, you seem pretty insecure. Would you like to talk more about why you feel everyone is trying to fight you?

Perhaps most CC owners aren't looking to start fights, but maybe that's just how you see things.
>>
>>24581444
How did we prove your point? I don't even carry. Besides acting agressive on the internet and IRL are different things. The majority of gun owners know and practice gun safety and are not braindead idiots like you think they are

IWB (inside waist band) carry is usually the preferred method, as it is easy, safe, low profile, and leaves the pockets free. It is almost always done with a leather or kydex holster that clips on the waistband
>>
>>24581434
It's worth mentioning that even pocket guns should be carried in pocket holsters

If 15 rounds of 9mm isn't enough, then I'm either a terrible shot or fucked anyways. And I know I'm not a terrible shot.
>>
>>24581594
Amen to that, as long as it's in the chest area. There's a surprising amount of stories of people surviving 20+ bullet wounds from handguns.
