Why does everyone use "uni"? I never once heard this growing up, everyone always referred to it as "college".

Because where I live, "college" and "university" mean two different things.
The word 'university' is in the name of a lot of institutions to begin with so why not?

In other countries, college is more like our high school, and what we call college is called university. Uni is a common abbreviation and refers to optional, more exclusive higher learning leading to a bachelor's degree or above. In the US we use college and university interchangeably.

There are a lot of non US posters. I was born and raised in the states, but go to uni in Canada; so, I say uni, like my peers. And it's shorter, familam.
