Yes, braces for a year. Honestly the worst part of it is the waiting. You get the braces and then you tell yourself "1 year from now and it'll be great!", and then time slows way down. That 1 year lasted forever for me because I knew at the end of it, it was going to be great. The braces hurt for a week, and the jaw surgery didn't hurt at all, though it does for some people. I was really swollen afterwards for about a month and a half, but then after that, it was great. I didn't recognize myself in the mirror and trust me I looked at myself in the mirror every day of that 1 year leading up to the surgery, just imaging what I'd end up looking like, and my expectations were met and then some. I was a full blown chad, and that almost made be break down crying. I had the fortune of just moving to a new town too so no one knew the old me, and instantly my life changed. Not just girls started wanting to be next to me, guys too, I gained some kind of respect from just how I looked and that felt and still feels great.

I had double jaw surgery. So, like you I had overbite (well deepbite, which is an extreme overbite).
The bottom jaw was moved forward and my chin was also moved forward (by cutting it and moving it). The top jaw was moved downward, so my smile wasn't as gummy. Though it wasn't that gummy to begin with.
No teeth were removed aside from my top wisdom teeth. I was born without my bottom wisdom teeth so those didn't need removing. Some people need some teeth removed, and that is where I hear things get a little tricky. I hear that removing teeth may result in having "dish face", though I never really looked into it as I didn't require removal of teeth.
As for my jaws, as I said, they're incredible. They're just like in the OP pic, and I couldn't be happier.
As for "Dish Face" I'm not sure if it still occurs even with double jaw surgery, it's mainly something that happens when a teen gets braces that need removal of teeth from the little I've looked into it.

I don't feel the bolts. I don't feel the plates either. Sometimes people can feel them if they really try to, but for the most part it's like there is nothing there. I don't think I took any medication, I forgot. I know that my mouth was wired shut for the first few weeks so I couldn't really do anything other than drink out of a straw.

Nope, no trouble breathing or any trouble at all. However there are cases (usually from people going to bad jaw surgeons) of people suffering greatly due to the surgery. It's not something you should do unless you're 100% certain your jaw surgeon is very, very good. My surgeon for example does 300 jaw surgeries a year. He's one of the best in the world.
A lot of the times breathing is made a lot easier after surgery.
