What would it take for us to sustain a colony of 1000 people on mars?

what would be the timeline?

How shall it function?

What energy source? Space elevators? Education system? Political system?

What are the problems and their solutions.

If you have the technology required to live on Mars... why not just use that technology to survive on Earth after an extinction level event?

A post-apocalyptic Earth is still going to be far more habitable than Mars, which is a shitty sand-blasted frozen rock. And you can't terraform the cunt because its losing 100 tons of atmosphere per day to the solar wind because it has a dead core and a weak-ass magnetic field.

yeah, but humaninty to become a space faring species, such a step is inevitable.

If we spread out to places where we can't survive without advanced technology, then we're just asking to go extinct. Civilization is just 2 missed meals away from collapsing. I'd rather not have my survival depend on something that can't be repaired using stone tools.

To save the human race from extinction, wouldnt it make sense to spread out incase something happens to earth?

It's not possible for various reasons. The only way it could be remotely possible is if "humanity" shed its meatsacks and uploaded consciousness to some kind of robots. However, the biggest stumbling block is the reality of what humans are. Ignoring the very real possibility that "consciousness" is a mix of both brain and body (thus it is impossible to upload into machines), we are war-like creatures who are motivated only by greed and short term gratification.

Notice how we went to the moon once. But only as part of a competitive war effort, and we gave up on it as soon as the war was over. Notice how all advanced technology is powered by either war or economic gain, with precisely zero technology coming out of man's desire to advance the species or even a long-term plan to save the species. All our recent technological progress is related to war and the fact that fossil fuels temporarily give us profitable energy sources.

As soon as fossil fuels are hard to come by we will revert back to a pastoral existence assuming we don't blow ourselves up in the meantime. There is no way to generate comparable energy from any other source, without losing out economically. Never in history have humans spent significant resources in something that wasn't profitable unless it was related to killing each other or some kind of crazy short-term status seeking (ie. building the pyramids as giant tombs for kings).
