I've played WoW for 11 years.
About every 1-2 years I get a new group of "friends".
Most people just disappear/quit after awhile and you're forced to look for a new group of people to do stuff with.
It's less "friends" and more so just acquaintances. WoW players are more like people you have at a job, you spend a lot of time with them so you kind of end up being friends by proxy but the moment you stop working together (raiding or pvping) you just drift apart and never speak again.

You're right, my experience probably would have been similar to that if I played and not the 'same group of friends in the same guild for 7 years before finally quitting together and slowly drifting apart' type.
