On one hand women logically pick bigger men, since we defend them, however that dosent explain why lanky, and weak tall guys are also generally preferable. I know that more attractive people are more intelligent, not sure if that correlates with height though. I think it may be a submission thing. People feel like height denotes some kind of authority. My guess would be a combination of mate selection and perceived dominance in interaction. Its not the end all be all though, think of it like some men have a free chunk of status, but it's hardely the end all be all. This man needs to be a beacon of greatness, someone that the woman can brag about and show to as many of her friends as possible. We perceive strength, masculinity, and leadership with men who stand out and are larger. These are traits women need to use in order to show off and feed their ego and add to the "why I'm better than you" narrative.
