The society I'm thinking of is Celtic, Germanic or even native American. None of which had a real "elite" class who ran everything like kings in medieval times did (I actually hate medieval times because that's when life turned to shit for white people).
What makes me salivate the most is that these ancient societies were usually divided by clan/family lines. If I was to be in a tribe of 50 and was a warrior for the chieftain who was my 2nd uncle or something that would be the bees knees. The people would look like me and I would relate to them because of that. To fight for and protect my own people would be the greatest feeling in the world. You have no idea how satisfied I would be if I died in defence of my real family, my own race and culture.

Because for each warrior/knight in the classic or medieval ages, there were hundreds of people starving and breaking ther backs in the fields. Odds are you would be one of them and die at an early age.
If there were a lot less people in this world, like if a plague strikes 75% of us down, the survivors could leave peaceful and productive lives as farmers and tradesmen.
Remember, peasants often had it better than people today think they did. They got about half the year off from work, and most of what they did do was their own fields for themselves plus some days on their lords fields to pay for his protection.
