I find most people who tell you they are 'Right wing/left wing/Labour/Conservative' lack critical thinking and support their side like it is a sports team. If being Labour meant you supported the imprisonment of homeless people for example, the Labour fans would now support the imprisonment of homeless people, despite it being against their self proclaimed 'left wing' views.
I also believe that most people are very self-serving and a lot more sociopathic than some may think. If you have virtuose and benevolent beliefs that lead you to believe that the NHS should exist to treat all people, citizens should be looked after by their country (regardless of ethinicity) and don't wish for people to be oppressed by Islam then you are probably a caring person, so it is hard to imagine how other's professing to be good and caring people could be completely self serving sociopaths. But they are. To see this you just need to look at the Paris attacks, as one example.
When the Paris attacks took place if you looked towards Tiwtter or Facebook, you would notice a lot of your left wing, pacificst, vegan, baby kissing, feminists friends would have jumped straight on to give their views But was their initial reaction one of condolences for the victims? No. Was it perhaps one of anger towards the assailants? No. A large majority of the response from the jump was the defense of Islam. They didn't give a shit about the victims, although they don't even give a shit about Islam, what they did care about was the chance to prove themselves as the most progressive, accepting, forward thinking person on social media and claim all of those well earned Social Brownie Points.

That's where things are so skewed though. Traditionally, if the right wing is the wing of privatization and rugged individualism, the state shouldn't care who is what religion. The idea of the right is that the State is less involved in those aspects of life. Therefore Islam should be accepted in an ideal right wing society as long as it doesn't harm productivity.
Conversely, the left wing is about having the State having more control. Therefore in a left wing society the State should be the one deciding if Islam will be accepted or not and if it is to what extent will it be able to operate. None of the most famous examples of left wing states have let religion flourish at all (PR China, Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, North Korea), of course in this country a Labour government is probably going to be more friendly to Islam than Conservative, but the idea that left=Freedom right=Oppression is misled.
