By the time you exited Mt. Moon you could easily have a Charmeleon, Nidoking/Nidoqueen. Gyarados, Pigeotto, and some kind of grass pokemon like Parasect or Weepinbell. It just takes perhaps half an hour of training on the Onixes and Geodudes in the cave. And teaching Megapunch to your Nidoking/Queen was always a nice way to just muscle through that goddamn Starmie.

So with the two moon stones from mount moon you could have a Charizard, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Gyarados, really all the cool Pokemon right from the get-go. Then again it's not a very difficult game.
I think that Charmander learned metal claw at level 16 in the fire red and leaf green remakes, so that made it even easier for the first gym.
