I thought he was very interesting. Initially, he didn't view people as people. He saw the world as something that pushed back a little bit when he pressed into it. This is why he was so shocked when Komugi asked him his name. Because of Komugi, he realizes that other beings can surpass him, and he begins to consider view points other than his own. This leads him to value human life.
This is a huge reduction of the Ant King's character arc. I may have just been surprised to find somewhat interesting character progression in a battle shounen.
