I have three. They each have different personalities and favorite foods. It's so cute. They're way more fun than hamsters.
Downside is they don't live all that long. Four years if you're lucky. They're also prone to respiratory infections that will kill if left untreated. So vet bills might get ya.

They're usually like $8 at the pet store. But if you want to pay a little more you can go to a good breeder and get a healthier rat that's less likely to get sick. They're also gonna be friendlier because they've been handled more.
Advice is to feed a good lab block like Oxbow Regal Rat and supplement with fresh veggies and fruit. Rats love home cooked meals too. Meat occasionally is a good treat, mine love liver. They're omnivores.
Female rats are very hyper, they'll run around a lot and play wrestle. Males are calmer and cuddlier. Look up the dapper rat, it's an Australian site with lots of ideas for enrichment.
