I studied the cold war for awhile and there is a vast amount of sources available,
though the key thing is there are great historians who have gone through the Russian/American archives and systematically approached this period.

For the cold war the 3 main traditions of approach are the Orhodox, Revisionist and Post Revisionist schools of thought, each with different opinions generated from different sources or use of sources to construct narratives.
