Not really. If you're going to move to a crowded city in which everyone's fighting for the number one spot like New York City, then you're pretty much going to have to pay rent. I can't think of any other reasonable system that would work in that context.

I'm rather on the 'liberal' side so I'm totally for private property and being able to rent it to who you want at the price you want. But I've encountered so many pieces of shit landlords who know every aspects of the law and when they can ignore it while you can'd do shit about it. I was renting a piece of shit apartment for a ridiculous price because the prices have more than doubled in 10 years, and he was saying me how it was unacceptable that the gas prices had gone up 2% when he was milking students due to government incompetency.

And yes, they're incredibly successful at keeping themselves in power, but incompetent at what they're supposed to be doing. The mere fact is is that the government is supposed to be by the people, for the people, but instead they've become a different class altogether, who keep people on social programs because it keeps them a voter pool of complacent sheep.
I own 2 houses and have 4 more I'm paying off. The renters pretty much pay the mortgage for the houses. If you have capitol to invest real estate can be great IMO. Much better than something like gold (lol)
