Dogs always seem to have a more personal relationship, atleast in my experience. The cats I've had were just kind of there, and didn't seem partial to anyone in the house.

My family got my great grandfather's siamese cat when he died and it did this. Actually, come to thing of it, he DID beg as well. That said, siamese cats are very dog-like. Lived until 21 btw, pretty impressive.

Really it depends on the breed. Siamese and ragdolls are fine, but most cat breeds are still pretty wild. Selective breeding can fuck animals over too, if they're bred solely for aesthetics and temperament is ignored. Pic related.
