Why did you ask her if she can afford it? Unless you're a close friend of someone, you shouldn't question someone's ability to budget. If you're going to talk about money with someone that, in this case, is basically an acquaintance, you need to keep it in an empathetic tone. For example:

Her: "I'm planning on starting driving lessons."

You: "Oh yeah? That's a good idea. Shit's expensive though eh?"

Here you've acknowledged that you're interested in her idea, while putting out a feeler in regards to money. If she says, "Yeah, it's a lot more than I thought it would be," then maybe you can talk about being able to afford, or how she plans to pay for it. If she mentions her parents or someone else is covering it, then you don't need to fucking talk about money any more. Move on to how she feels about the experience itself, "are you excited to start? Nervous?" She might be telling you about the driving lessons because she's nervous about going and wants some fucking moral support. Maybe she's just excited and wants to share that with someone.

I'm sure plenty of you think that's just "normie fucking bullshit" REEE etc. But if you genuinely want to be able to talk to people, you need to consider how it makes the other person feel.

All of that shit is split second decisions that happen on the fly.

You need to practice, you can start by apologising and explaining your autism. When I say something that's fucking retarded, even if I find out later like you did, I would apologise because I probably didn't intend for it to come across that way at all. I would explain that I was genuine interested/concerned about [insert scenario here].

Bit of a ramble, but you can't just say you're fucked whichever way you go. You need to learn how to talk to people, and practise. You can't blame anyone but yourself.
