I prefer to hit the random button. The only character I can't do at least alright with is Bowser, too slow and big with poor finishing moves.
My favorite to play is definitely Ness. My general best is probably Pikachu.
I miss playing that game for hours with friends.

I play PM and I kick ass with Yoshi :)
And I like PM a bit better just because I'm bad at playing melee competitively. I don't have the patience to learn advanced techniques.

Melee has more depth than PM.
Project M is easier and everyone is basically broken, still good game/mod.
Melee is also more fun to watch IMO.

Marth is easy at the low level but once you get to top level you got to really think each move you do and be very precise with your tipper hitbox while always spacing and since you don't have a projectile you must also be aggressive in a very unique way.

Maybe melee isn't as competitive and hardcore as SF, KOF, etc.
But still it is very difficult to pull many of the techniques that pro players use and mind games are very strong compared to other games.
And it's very fun to watch for casual players.
