i have several family that have spent 72 hour holds for 5150. It stays with you for any job you ever apply for, its expensive, it fucks with your driving records, insurance goes up, etc. just go to NA or AA and pretend you're an addict. you'll meet plenty of fucked up people there.

I'll tell you what happens, although I've only been to one for the criminally insane. My friend was a guard there, I'm not a nut as of yet. About eighty percent were In a state the guards called the "drug shuffle" moving a mile an hour to nowhere, and the rest were in another dimension. I say an "patient" walk between two black guards and sing "a nigger over there, a nigger over here, a nigger everywhere. A nigger nigger nigger." It was funny but I doubt you'd be making friends.

Just go to one, tell them you're feeling suicidal and you need help, and then get admitted. You'll probably be there a week at most.
And since its voluntary commitment, it will be confidential, so you can still purchase guns later on in life if you want one (and live in America).
