Not that weird, it's difficult to live in Japan with much more social pressure than you or I experience. They can't afford kids and getting laid at a young age is tough because you're expected to continually study/join clubs/whatever for 16 hours a day until you are an adult. Then you are expected to find your waifu within the short amount of time that you start work for 16 hours a day or collapse under the pressure and suicide/go hikki mode.
Same thing is happening to our country now (US), just at a lesser extent, birth rates are dropping quickly here and places like the UK. Jobs are pretty hard to find and school is terribly expensive unless you were born rich. Our generations are much less likely to have children than the last.
It's a society that literally breeds betas. Also they have all kinds of distractions like porn and vidya, I hit on more woman in the month without a computer than I have in my entire life.
