Thanks man, I'm a big fan of birds and also the insect population explodes whenever there is a lot of feral cats around. Obviously I don't want to deal with bug swarms if I don't have to. If you see a feral cat and want to catch it, you usually don't need to pay for a box trap, the humane society will often lend them to you for free.

What state are you in? I'm in London, UK so I wasn't aware that anywhere had a problem with feral cats other than like Spain and Portugal. I know that domestic cats in the UK definitely have an effect on bird life, especially since here indoor cats are unheard of.

I'm in Florida. Most of my neighbors have outdoor cats so feral cats are attracted to this location. I'm not sure why people enjoy having outdoor cats here, possibly because it's warm and there isn't a big threat of coyotes or raptor birds like colder states. No small birds are in my neighborhood and we have a pretty bad bug problem still.
Non-native iguanas have moved in lately due to the abundance of insects. I wouldn't be surprised if they start fighting or killing cats considering how dangerous they are. Florida has very loose exotic pet laws and pet laws in general, plus the perfect climate to leave most pets outside at all times. Never had this problem in other states.
I spend most of my time lately watching large sea birds that hang around a canal near my house and can't be easily killed by cats.

I've heard they are a problem on the keys of Florida. Iguanas are pretty much taking over South Florida because there is no predator for them and the environment is right, but I don't think they can move up north Florida because it gets pretty cold around the gulf/north Florida in winter.

I don't get anywhere near large birds most of the time because they can do serious damage, but I have been attacked by some grackles before. One of them got me to drop a taco I bought and was walking home with because she scared the shit out of me.
There was one time I was down by the canal and some little kid was fishing and he accidentally hooked a pelican. It took two adult men to hold it to cut the hook out. I've never actually touched a pelican before this and was amazed by how strong they are.

We were at this alligator park place, you could buy hotdogs to chuck to the gators and I imagine the birds had realised that tourists = food so they followed him around hoping to snatch hotdogs off him. They were hella terrifying though!
GoPro did an advert recently following a guy trying to teach a pelican he rescued and raised to catch fish, there's a part where it lands on his shoulder and it looks heavy as fuuuck.
Mostly foxes, not much else in London other than scraggy pigeons. I'm pretty close to Greenwich park though which has loads of deer, grey squirrels are common too. I'm originally from a village down on the South Coast, we used to catch stickleback fish in ponds and slow-worms were pretty common as well as rabbits. Got the odd hedgehog roaming around in our garden if we put food out for them, never seen a badger irl though.
Bird wise starlings and sparrows are super common, as well as finches. Pelicans are apparently in St James' Park (I've heard stories of them eating pigeons) and there's also loads of parakeets which apparently come from an old movie studio that used exotic birds in films and then let them go wild after filming finished

Probably Gatorland, I heard it burned down a little while ago, glad to see they were able to rebuild it fine. I went there once when I was 10, they have a pretty cool avary but the birds were really packed together so probably wasn't too fun for them. Also, my mom was pissed off that we had to hang out under shitting birds and made me leave pretty fast.
I feel like I would be pretty enchanted or charmed if wildlife here contained mostly foxes, finches and hedgehogs, especially cute hedgehogs. I do see some foxes here though. Sounds like a Disney movie or something.
I would like to see a badger too. I would say the rarest native animal I've seen is a porcupine and it was cute as fuck, and much bigger than I expected. There are a lot of manatees around here and they are also pretty cute too, plus they love it if you squirt them with fresh water with a hose.

I try not to get too sad about captive animals, it is very unfortunate, but a lot of it is about animal/wildlife education anyway so that's cool. Sometimes it is very painful to see a captive animal in a badly made cages, especially when they start doing weird repetitive behavior because they are bored. A lot of zoos take animals that are just incapable of living in the wild due to injury, being a circus animal or whatever and rehabilitate them. They don't really pull animals out of the wild anymore and just trade already captive animals.
If you ever come back to Florida and you want to see a manatee, look for manmade canals. They like still salt water a lot because it has high algae and seaweed growth, also large boats cannot fit in manmade canals so it's pretty quiet/safe for manatees. They can be hard to spot unless they are near the surface because they generally stay completely still and have algae growing on them. In deep water, they just look like seaweed under the water most of the time at a glance.

Yeah, I've got no issue with rehabilitation and breeding species that would otherwise go extinct but the vast majority in the UK seem just be there to make money exploiting animals. At least wild animals in circuses has really dropped off in the last decade or so.

San Francisco is kind of dangerous and expensive, I don't recommend going there unless you want to walk into crackheads and scammers. If you do go there, stay away from Castro Street and those areas and save up a lot of money to stay in the rich part of town. Seriously the most dangerous city I've ever visited, I managed to get a gun (by a cop arresting some crackheads) pointed at me within staying there for less than three days.
I would visit Yellowstone or anywhere near the Rocky Mountains, such as Colorado. I lived in Boulder, CO for a while and it's quite beautiful, but the more rural areas are even more surprising. I also recommend Hawaii because the wildlife is pretty mindblowing and seeing a active volcano is pretty cool. No one likes tourist there though, and there's tons of pissed of filipinos there addicted to meth so you know, be careful. All expensive locations are kind of like that though. Most people living in Hawaii are pretty friendly though, I only lived around Kona/the big island.
Texas and New York are cool, you'll have fun. I love people in very Southern states like Texas because they are all extremely polite and conservative. NYC is just cool because it's a big city and there's a lot to see and do. It's also less dangerous than San Francisco honestly.
I also recommend Chicago, it's a lot cheaper than most major cities. They have great food and Shedds Aquarium is really cool (plus you're guaranteed to see a manatee there). They also have a lot of great artwork and one of the best art museums in the US. There's a lot of sensationalized articles about crime there but there really isn't much crime at all in the city itself. They also have a great train system that will take you around the whole city cheaply, and even outside of the city.

Flying between cities is going to be cheaper, but traveling via train in Chicago specifically is cheap as fuck. Most cities don't have public transportation unless they are huge or extremely liberal (such as Portland, Seattle, Denver, Austin, etc.)
You should check out deserts if you can, they are pretty cool and it would be extremely cheap to travel in those places considering no tourist ever visit deserts in the US. If you have a friend in Texas who can drive, ask them to take you around New Mexico and Texas. Go see White Sands in New Mexico, it's a place usually only visited by locals and it's one of those places that you can really only see in the US.
You're not missing anything by avoiding San Francisco, it's just a big city suffering from high rent/poor people. There isn't anything all that interesting in it either that stands out besides the location itself and the fact that it is stigmatized as a growing liberal city.
