I know that feel op. I used to spend time in the areas near Itchica and Rochester. Upstate New York really is a wasteland in winter time, some of the most depressed areas in the United States are in NYS. Honestly it doesn't help that people there are some of the most redneck of rednecks making the deep south look refined in comparison. That, loss of industry and the fact that in the winet the entire area turns into a frozen wasteland.

The weird thing is that NYC is a really shitty city. Super crowded. Super expensive. Super dirty. When you go out at night, herds of rats will run around you. You can't walk any where without the scrabbling of a gigantic rat accompanying you.
I live in downtown Seattle and have for years, and walk the city almost every night. I may have seen one rat once, but it also might have been a squirrel.
