what do you guys think of melancholia?

i watched it a few days ago and i found the end very soothing
Probably one of the more accessible Lars von Trier films, but still difficult to watch.

One of my fav movies of all time and my 2nd fav from Von Trier (fav being DitD, even if it's not the patrician choice (i.e. not Evropa / Riget / Dogville)).
Melancholia terrifies me. There's something very close to Rensais's Marienbad (pic related) and the whole end of the world with no life outside of it makes me very unconfortable.
Quality thread OP, a shame it's on the most pathetic board of this pathetic website.

One of my favourite films. I really like and admire Lars Von Trier as a writer and director. I would strongly recommend Nymphomaniac in addition to this. Thanks for the thread OP.

Resnais*

Nymphomaniac is that one move from VT that I found little to no interrest watching. A shameful follow-up to Melancholia.

It's Von Trier's way of saying that depression always wins in the end. Quite a few of his films are basically stories with that message, just obscured to some extent.

I found it to be sublime. There was so much to enjoy, on so many levels. What did you dislike about it?

dancer in the dark and resnais marienbad, gonna watch them this week, thanks.
I found the thought of depression "winning" or as a source of comfort during the end to be quite nice.

Very true. Dumb people telling me "lol first part drags on waaaaay too long" didn't understand it's meaning and the subtle ritual-based society denounced by the main character.

For me, it was intellectual pornography, far from the down-to-earth, very strong feelings revolving around most of his filmography. I think VT went the easy-way with a heavily sex-based movie, betraying his amazing film-maker skills in drama / comedy (The Idiot).

Just compare that pic with one of Melancholia's "paintings" from the beginning - it's a huge hommage. If you liked Melancohlia, you may totally like Marienbad.
>>24328739
yeah I noticed it immediately, VT did an incredible job with projecting and emotionalizing the scenery and cinematography
>>24328739
Nymphomaniac seemed to me to be a combination between genuine philosophy regarding the human condition, and a series of insults to the people who criticize his work and dissect it to an insane level. Basically, an intellectual troll. In any case, I found it charming and very much enjoyed the entire space that the film took me to.

Lars von Trier is a fucking garbage director whose desperate attempts at being profound would be amusing if they weren't so fucking bland and devoid of any actual signs of life.
>you'll never experience that ending scene from Melancholia in a move theater with other people, stunned by the droning sound and the colors and scared shitless in front of the end of the world
Why even bother living

>buzzword "criticism"

He asked what I thought, not for a blow by blow takedown of the movie. Chillax m8. We're all just here to see what other people's opinions are.

Could not get into it. I loved Dogville and have been planning to watch Dancer in the Dark for months now. I'm afraid of what emotions I will feel watching a sad Bjork.

It's a pretty crushing film, but very much worth watching. Once again, another way for Von Trier to say that depression always wins (just my opinion, maaaan).
