Usagi Drop is a unique case where most will tell you to avoid the manga. The story is twice as much as the show and a lot of people didn't like the direction it went. The first half stands fine on its own.

I don't know what it is about anime that gives it that escapist effect.... well I guess, like you said, it's a feeling it gives you with its corny stories and shit, you can usually relate to them. I decided to start watching Michiko to Hatchi from the beginning since the 2 episodes I saw on Adult Swim were pretty good. Not incredibly deep and a really predictable story, but still good. The animation is everything. I pretend Rihanna is Michiko.

Not really escapist but I find that masaaki yuasa anime tend to be my favorite. Everything he has produced and that I have watched I have enjoyed thoroughly. His art style is really unique and interesting.
I also like anime by Kenji Nakamura. I feel like most robots would really enjoy Kuuchuu Buranko. It's funny and cute, but also mature and intelligent.

Not all of Miyazaki's movies are preachy. He can be a little heavyhanded, but they aren't always as bad as something like Nausicaa could be.
Not to mention there are Ghibli movies that aren't directed by him. Takahata has directed several ghibli features alongside Miyazaki, and they are easily some of the best Ghibli has to offer. Only Yesterday and Kaguya are probably hsi best works, especially Kaguya which was his last movie before he retired.
Whisper of the Heart is also one of their best works, neither directed by Miyazaki or Takahata. Instead it was the directorial debut of Yoshifumi Kondo, who was expected to be one of the Ghibli greats among Miyazaki and Takahata, but he sadly passed away shortly after its release. Damn shame since Whisper of the Heart is an great film, and he had the potential to do even greater things.
