Normies and web 2.0.
Everything.
Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.

your outlook on the world. more is going right with the world today than it ever has actually, just not for us
Social media, Specifically twitter. Normies have little to no interest in the internet unless they find something social.
Other than social media, normies enjoy 9gag, cat videos and John Oliver (or anything to validate their simple liberal views)
Literally memes

This.
The original inhabitants of the "internet" were nerds, dorks, and outcasts. There was no social media, and no "memes". People actually had to have some degree of technological know-how in order to access certain online communities.
I'd say what made it all go downhill was the introduction of social media. Once enough people were regularly online, companies started capitalizing on internet culture, causing it to degrade. Soon everything was made accessibly to everyone. The cultures of online communities were appropriated and bastardized by those who didn't understand them fully.
If there's anything we can learn from the evolution of the internet, it's how absolutely horrible normies are.
-the internet got accessible to the masses, before it was hard for most people to connect
-old people made laws for the internet once they discovered it
-social media
-computers got cheaper which goes back to the first point
-the .com boom at the very beginning of the 00s where people were starting sites left and right

twitter did more than anything else to dumb down the internet

This. Fuck mobile devices and apps. Now every nigger and fucking soccer mom has easy access to the internet.
Everything, son, everything went wrong with the fucking internet. It's devils creation and destroys humanity.
I hate people, fucking savages.
