i watched an interview where richard wright basically explained that syd was always a bit off, but nothing too serious. then syd disappeared for about 2 weeks at some point, did a shit load of acid during that time, and came back to the band completely changed and totally off his shit

I think once you get famous everyone loves you, so you shed your robotness. Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain, and Rivers Cuomo were probably all robots before becoming rockstars.

this wasn't anything unusual for syd. if you listen to pink floyd's live catalog during his short stint with the band, you'll notice it varies in quality, from incredibly mindblowing, to wondering if he's even trying to play the guitar. he showed up to many of their shows high out of his mind.
he also handled fame very poorly. ended up isolating himself from society, gaining quite a bit of weight and made some "solo" music, but it never really caught on, even though i think it's better than most of floyd's work up til maybe atom heart mother or meddle. based on this, he does seem quite a bit like a social outcast, and it seems like he abused the shit out of psychedelics, as those were what probably allowed him to feel most "normal" in pressure and social situations.
