I'll play devil's advocate. Go ahead and assume none of the following applies to me.
Some people are completely surrounded by these shallow people. Some even had parents and siblings of this type and were surrounded by it constantly growing up. It's hard to tell someone--especially when a sense of love and belonging is a biological need--to cut out everyone in their life and be alone in hopes that "there's better people out there." Most people would like to say that they're completely independent and don't need validation from others, but that's not true. It's a human need. Yeah, some need it more than others, but the idea holds that some people really don't have a choice. Their parents put on movies and television that displayed this shallow culture constantly; their peers all through their formative years went along with it and shunned those who did not belong; hell, even their god damned teachers displayed it.

You would then address how fragile the mind is during its development and how poor schooling environment and poor home environment does not turn out well for everyone.
