When we invented guns and cannons. Seriously, all the cool shit like chain-mail, knight armor, swords, and castles were made obsolete by modern firepower. There's no reason to build a massive stone structure to defend against attackers when they can just bomb you from 1/2 a mile away.

Guns during the time of the late medieval ages were not able to pierce plate armor, but due to the high cost of production of plate armor it became obsolete. Explosives would destroy a knight in plate armor though. Basically, knights were not made obsolete by guns, but by the money required to be a knight.
