It's marketed towards kids because it's such a successful franchise and any successful franchise is going to try to market to as many demographics as possible, so they truly market towards all age groups. The show itself is entertaining enough to engage younger crowds but a large chunk of the philosophical undertones present in the films only registers with older audiences. That said, this next film is rated PG-13, if it was explicitly targeted towards kids, the rating would at most be PG.
