>becoming a trucker

Is this the best job for people like us?
I went to a truck driving school for some info and it sounds cool. Good pay, don't have to deal with people much and you are mostly left alone.

Any truckers here? Seems like a sweet gig. Best of both worlds- financial freedom and solitude while still maintaining outcast status.
>>
i heard you won't get much sleep and the jobs are dissappearing soon because of literal robots. (not you)
>>
>>24130049
Where did you hear that? Seems like self driving cars are still a far way away for commercial use. And I don't mind lack of sleep
>>
I hitchhiked with one for awhile. It seemed like a boring job but she was cut out for it. I guess if you don't mind the monotony, it's worth the pay. I definitely met some interesting other truckers, with so much time some of them pick up neat skills or talents.

The other guy raises a good point though, robots will probably take it as a job.
>>
Sounds good but I think I'd be too soft for a job like that, u probably need to know some shit about cars too so I'm fucked there
>>
Security is a better robot job, even if you work someplace like I do you can spend like half your day shit posting and watching videos
>>
>>24130049
Lol, the jobs aren't disappearing. There's literally hundreds of truck driving jobs in any area on Craigslist.
You're also only allowed to drive a certain number of hours each day so if the people you talked to aren't sleeping when they can that's their fault.
>>
>>24130138
Lolno. They're right around the corner. Truckers are going to be one of the first casualties right before chefs and receptionists.
>>
>>24130270
Care to site your sources, friend?
>>
>>24130008
my dad and uncle both do it
as serbian immigrants their options were limited and their dad used to do it in the home country
they're both normies but you can be an autist and do it, but you'll miss out on amazing banter and meeting fascinating people
>>
>>24130211
how many years in college to be a security guard
>>
>>24130180
can you tell me more about your hitchhiking experience? i fantasize alot about just leaving everything behind and hitchhike.
>>
>>24130211
Securitybot here, can confirm. Getting paid $14/hr just to shitpost basically. They have most video sites blocked here though, shit is lame.
>>
>>24130270
I would estimate at least 10 years before they are used at all and even then it would only be the biggest companies that have them, I think there is pleeenty of time to be a trucker. It's not like it is a huge investment or anything.
>>
>>24130335
Not him, but there's self driving cars and trains now. Truck driving is all about efficiency and it doesn't require a uniquely human touch in order to function. This is a bad combination for people like me who may need to fall back on their CDL in order to get a consistent paying job.
>>
In 30 years or less the industry will be fully automated and you will be middle aged, unemployed with no skills and no future
>>
Get into it now and get as much money as you can.

Also robots won't completely replace it. Inner city drivers will still be needed. And they might still need truckers to baby sit the truck. True you won't be paid as much but you will have much more free time.

If I got paid 30K a year to babysit a robot in a truck I would do it in a heartbeat.
>>
You'll be replaced in a few years. It's fucking retarded to become a trucker right now.
>>
A trucker comes into the place I work sometimes and he has a cat that rides around with him. That seems awesome.

His cat has it's own ID badge at the place he works and gets upset if he leaves it home when he goes trucking.
>>
>>24130487
This is bullshit though? Truck drivers have to supervise and help secure loads. They also need to be there to monitor the loads so no one steals them.
There's also tons of paperwork a truck driver has to fill out for each pickup and delivery.

I would hope so. I don't foresee high value or dangerous cargo trucking going automated, which means there will always be a market for specialized drivers, but as we move forward in this century it will be harder and harder for an average Joe to go get his CDL and hit the highway.

I wish I was born in the late 30s so I could truck across the developing US in the 50s during the highway boom, then commit suicide before the 70s gas crisis. It would be a good life.
>>
Robots are replacing everyone.

There aren't any jobs not getting replaced by robots besides people who clean old people's asses.

Robots won't even touch that.
>>
>>24130563
Damn it's not too different from today.
>>
My city is begging for truckers, I see CDL DRIVERS WANTED signs every time I go outside and the radio is full of ads for openings for $70k+ jobs

It's tempting but I think I'll stay NEET.
>>
>>24130561
It will of course be more complicated than just a mechanic robotic sled with the cargo attached to it. There will likely be a job, which of course will be worth less, for someone to sit on the truck and monitor things. Complete automation would require systems monitoring the cargo, condition of truck, et cetera. The eggheads have this stuff worked out, man.

Driving older trucks is a special experience. No power steering, a giant pizza pie sized steering wheel and, here's the treat, Detroit diesel 2-stroke engines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEKlhdj7eEM

>eye disorder
Hurts to sit there looking at something like a road all day, I love road trips so I still do them every year or two, but it gets pretty bad by about halfway through the day.

Funny thing, I can work construction fine, because there's constant distraction/tasks i'm required to be doing and when my eye starts hurting I can't do anything, sort of goes numb after a few minutes. Can't exactly rub my eye when my hand's covered in concrete.
>>
>>24130648
Lol, I don't see that happening in the near future when a lot of truck companies are too cheap to even properly take care of the upkeep on their trucks.
>>
>>24130471

>>
>>24130648

that tears it I think I'm going to have to go get my CDL
>>
>>24130403
None and a lot of places will help you get your guard license if you don't have it, there's a shortage of warm bodies in the industry
>>
>>24130740
It's not easy, but it's not as hard as people make it out to be.

Give it 6 months and you can drive a truck better than you can move your body.
>>
>>24130734
My phone is lucky if it gets 2G while I'm there I don't know what kind of wizardry they're using. The pc's have social media, youtube and stuff like that blocked. Surprisingly they don't have 4chan blocked though so I can shitpost all shift and occasionally do a patrol. Can't complain about it.
>>
>>24130740
Do it, man. Why not add a few more certifications to your resume? Even if you don't ultimately end up in trucking, you'll have experience and more shit to show potential employers for any job.
>>
>>24130796
I'm a good driver, good with spatial reasoning and I'm smarter than most people so I should be fine
>>
my brother does this, the hours are terrible you are literally on the road every waking moment
>>
>>24130884
I'm on 4chan every waking moment, it would be nice.

Also Op could just drive in the city. Which would be like 8-10 hours. and then go home plus no weekends
>>
>>24130806
>don't have 4chan blocked
It's surprising how many places don't.

You ever load movies and whatnot onto your phone, at least? And I'm actually curious, any drinking (I'm talking one or two beers a night, not throwing a kegger in the breakroom), or is it very much a sober workplace?
>>
>>24130987
Yeah you better believe I load as many movies as possible onto it. Without them I wouldn't be able to survive some shifts. As far as I know no one drinks while on duty. If they do then they're hiding it well. What about where you're at?

I'm not security, I work construction, but depending on the site it's definitely fine to crack open a beer or two during the day.

How'd yo uget into security, just take one of those cert. classes and apply to stuff, or what? Also, nighttime sec I'd imagine? daytime sec seems like it's actually competitive to get into, relatively speaking of course.

I basically just got certified with no plan because I assumed security would be a robot-friendly job and applied everywhere possible.

They offered me daytime shifts but I took nights because less people to deal with and I was already a night person. How tough is it to break into construction though? I've had to escort enough construction guys that like to talk about how much they're making to know that there's way better options out there for me.
>mfw I overheard some guys saying that the checks they'd get that week would be over a grand
>>
i work as a dispatcher.

owner-operators can pull down $90k easy, most of them average $120k or more a year if they wanna push themselves.

if you have no family or anything tying you down theres still a lot of cash to be made.
>>
these robot trucks in the future will still need a driver behind the wheel.
>>
It is more likely that the western world will collapse before truckers are replaced by robots than vice versa.
>>
>>24131829
>How tough is it to break into construction
I'd start out as a day laborer anywhere, under-the-table even, basically ditch-digging or something on that tier. From there, you can get into real construction, carpentry or masonry or something, electrical if you're not retarded.

I was electrical, quit because I just didn't like it, money was ok but at my level money's pretty much the same across the board (not a journeyman.) I'm thinking about doing plumbing, possibly cabinetry-type carpentry, in the future. Right now I'm procrastinating on getting a better job either with Forest Service or a road crew (lead guy's actually straight-up offered me the job, it would mean moving back to my hometown which is awesome except that it would essentially be cramming what's left of my pathetic romance life into a coffin and burying it (small town, all the girls in my agegroup i.e. 20's are either married, massive party sluts, or have dated pretty much all my friends over the past decade.)
>>
It'll be a long time before driverless cars take over truck driving jobs. Driverless cars aren't expert in various weather conditions, and various other edge cases need to be worked out.
>>
>>24131951
What's a dispatcher?
Also is the 90k+ only if you own a truck?

Definitely going to take your advice man, thanks. Ditch digging sounds like a neat experience and a decent start.

The situation you're in sounds like a tough one though, wish I could offer advice. Either way I hope that you end up happy with whatever decision you come to. Nice talking with you m8

>tough one
Meh, not really, for the first time in my 24 years I'm deciding between relatively high-paying prospects/offers rather than trying my ass off to find someone to give me part-time minimum wage.

I just wish my hometown was, well ... I do love my hometown, but the idea of finding a girl there is a laugh. And I do like girls....
>>
My dad is a truck driver. He loves it.
I'm pretty sure he has depression and not dealing with a "boss" every day keeps him pretty happy.
>>
>>24130008
You only get paid if your wheels are moving
Waiting for a load, no pay
Waiting to get unloaded, no pay
Flatbed, tarp and tie down
Box truck, clean it out wash it out, no pay
Some loads are don by hand and unloaded by hand, you, for minimum wage
Broke down, repairs, no pay
Company shits out on repairs, it's on you ,your driving
Need pay, you go where they want
Winters in the northwest, ice, snow
Narrow time windows for delivery, accident, traffic, out of hours, too bad, not on time, delivery refused, it's on you
Home time, 2-3 days a month
If loaded you can't leave the truck
Doing you weekly hours reset, stuck at a rest area or truck stop for two days, no pay, can't leave the load
Maps are all fucked up, low bridges (east coast), no truck streets, fucked up delivery sites
Do you get a mini sleeper or a nice walk in
Are you a team driver, always moving, one sleeps, one drives
Bad food, shitting on the side of the road, cops have a hard on for you
Mileage is based on a movers atlas, not actual miles driven, nice, fucked again
Are you a felon, good luck, not anymore
Some shippers want you there within a 15 minute window, then they 8 hours to put you in a dock, then 12 hours to unload you, all this time no pay and your hours of service are ticking down
Unless you are with a local company and home at night, it really sucks, long hours, low pay, major stress, no time for doctors, family, anything, turnover at most of the majors is 100% per year.
Go to school and get a real career
Bonus round, how many truckers have all their teeth? How many don't have back or arm injuries? How many are overweight? How many are clean? How many have successfull relationships?
How about none.
Good Luck

unless you will drive one of those roadtrains or whatever in straya/united dumbistan

you do not want to be the avarage trucker if you are a robot

there are gazillion rules regarding how much you can drive, how much you have to rest and when you can or cant drive
if you fuck it up you are going to be fined, fined as in it might be more than your salary
(it is all recorded, you cannot cheat the system, it only depends on the goodwill of the inspectors or your luck, how often you get supervised)

and its all gona go TITS up everytime, because traffic is, well traffic, and you need to make your own plans and remember your hours

you need to deliver in time, but your operator wont be any help, since its usually some dumb uni retard who couldnt care less about you
you will have e GPS which will lead you to dead ends where you cant turn around
you will have to deal with destination staff, and they love to make you unpack when its not your job, and they arent in a hurry when you are

i could go on, but truckers are ppl who are life artists, easily adjusting and give no fucks about difficulties

robots, especially you barely 18 mommies little boys, will crap your pants at the first difficulties
>>
>>24133988
About 85% accurate, considering my 8 years over the road. The problem is if you want a local job, though you're going to have to have experience, and the only people hiring are those assholes you talk about.

Last job was pretty sweet though, made $18/hour at Lowe's delivering appliances most days because I was 1 of 2 guys in store that could drive the flatbed and use the truck-mounted forklift. Too bad I got too crazy to keep that job, was nice being at home at 3pm every day
>>
Not a trucker persay, but I've done a lot of truck driving for my job. I can imagine with a nice suped up truck with a sweet cab would be a robots dream.
