Initially I gained capital through scams (the ol' "gimme your password and I'll make you a mod", worked like 30% of the time) that I would then make profit from by trading. I think I was like in the top-10 wealthiest users at my height even though I had never paid a penny for anything.
Eventually there was an exploit that allowed you to copy furni and the market crashed. Suddenly the rare items that I had invested in were 1000x as common and I lost like 80% of my fortune. This was in like 2005 I think.

You guys remember the exploit that let you turn invisible? You'd open two instances of habbo, enter a room on window 1, then enter the same room on window 2. Your character on window 1 would walk out of the room while the window 2 character would appear, being invisible to everyone else currently in the room. Everyone who entered after you could see you though.
I had a lot of fun eavesdropping on people with that. Sometimes I'd enter a game like falling furni and then block the other players, making them lose the game. The other players could actually see me since they came in after me, but the host who had been there before I came in wouldn't. So they'd see some asshole who sticks around the arena for every game just fucking other players over and would beg for the host to kick me, but he had no idea there was anyone there.
Another "exploit" I remember was the fact that whenever the mods would shut down a room (by passwording it) for rule breaking or whatever, they always used the password "null". You could get to a lot of cool places with that.

Habbo hotel actually had a pretty cool art style, there really is no other virtual hangouts like it. I found 4chan because of it. I recently tried getting on my 8 year old account, but it was lost. Decided to go on one of the "habbo retros" which is just usermade versions of it except no having to pay stupid money for furniture. I don't know it just lost the charm, maybe I'm too old. Same thing with 90% of exploits - shitty programmers not sanitizing their inputs. You could use a similar trick to change the color of your character to any hex color or turn invisible. The way your character appearance worked was that there was a set of features with their assigned numbers (1 for spiky hair, 2 for long hair etc.) and if you manually changed that number to something that wasn't assigned to any graphic, that part of your character didn't get rendered and you were invisible.
They did fix those exploits very quickly as they became widely known, I imagine as soon as someone hijacked an admin account.

My first account was on the .co.uk version of habbo in 2002, my friend down the street got me into it and I spent most of my time playing games and eventually amassing enough to host my own which I then scammed people with. I never spent a penny on it, and coins didn't exist back then; my friend did though and as such he had a big casino I eventually went and got a whole lot of rares in. I was a major script kiddie and did the whole drinks with no fridge in the room thing, making teleporters flash endlessly and briefly dice rigging until it was fixed and also a dj for a website for a little while.
Eventually the .ca version came out and I migrated there, reserved a ton of names and did the same thing again on and off for years, as well as meeting a girl who would send me cute pictures with notes to me on them. By coincidence I ended up moving to the same town as her around 2008 and even the same school, we had tons of plans but I never ended up talking to her for some reason.. She even came to my door one Halloween with her friends and wanted me to come out with them and I just closed the door. It was around that time I moved on from habbo and msn was slowly phasing out.
A few years ago I went to go and check it out again and the three versions of habbo merged into .com and none of my accounts worked which is a shame because I can't make people with a newer account than me feel inferior, show off the old event badges or gamble all the rares I had stored away. If I think a little more I probably have a good number of stupid stories over that long period if anyone wants those.

The habbo hacker scene was what got me interested in programming and reverse engineering in the first place. I remember there being a lot of these sites that taught you some of the well known exploits and people who could do something no one else could got a lot of respect. There was a market for it too, I paid a lot of furni for someone to teach me the invisibility trick.
One guy who I looked up to the most could actually crash your computer through habbo. Like, not even crash the habbo application or your web browser, but take down your entire operating system. God knows how he did it, you'd just get some cryptic error message and had to restart your computer. I damn near shit myself the first time he showed it to me. He was like the zen master of our little scene, wielding power that us memory editing peasants could only dream of.
